Living a Life of Freedom: An Invitation to Breathe Again

What does it really mean to live free as a parent especially in the world of foster care, adoption, trauma, and healing?

At The Well Connected Family, we recently completed a powerful five-week series focused on the deep and layered topic of freedom. What we learned together is this:

Freedom is not a destination. It’s a way of living daily, intentionally, and fully present.

This post gathers the heart of that journey into one place so you can reflect, reconnect, and continue walking in freedom right where you are.

Freedom Begins in Christ

Freedom starts with identity, not behavior.

It doesn’t come from getting it all right or having a perfectly behaved child. It comes from knowing who you are in Christ and whose you are.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” -John 8:36

When we root ourselves in God’s truth, we no longer have to be ruled by shame, fear, or striving. We can parent from a place of peace instead of pressure.

Fear Cannot Be the Driver

Fear creeps in quietly. It tells us we’re not doing enough. It makes us question every decision.

But fear was never meant to lead us. Freedom teaches us how to parent from peace to pause, pray, and choose truth over panic.

We learned that freedom doesn’t always mean having control. Sometimes it means releasing control and trusting the One who sees the full picture.

There’s Power in Being Authentically You

Comparison is a thief.

Whether it's comparing your journey to another family's or your child’s progress to someone else's it keeps you stuck.

Freedom invites you to stop striving and simply show up as you. To release the pressure to perform and embrace the unique story God is writing in your home.

Trusting God’s Timing Is Part of the Process

Waiting is hard. Whether it’s waiting for a placement, a breakthrough, or the next step in the adoption process delays can feel heavy.

But freedom means trusting even in the waiting. Trusting that God is still working behind the scenes, even when you can’t see progress.

Sometimes freedom looks like stillness. Sometimes it sounds like, “I trust You, Lord,” even when the outcome is unclear.

Presence Over Productivity

One of the most powerful shifts we experienced in this journey was realizing that doing more doesn't equal being faithful.

One of our community stories came from a parent who had been volunteering, training, and pouring out constantly. Yet at home, she felt absent disconnected from her spouse and kids.

When she finally released the need to be everywhere for everyone, she rediscovered what it felt like to be present in her own home.

That choice brought peace. That shift was freedom.

Freedom is often found not in adding more, but in letting go.

This Week’s Challenge: Create a Freedom Filter

This week, try this before you commit to anything new:

Ask yourself:

  1. Does this align with my family's current needs?

  2. Am I saying yes out of peace or pressure?

  3. Will this stretch me thin or protect my ability to be present?

Write these questions somewhere visible. Let them guide your decisions as you choose peace over pressure.

You Are Free Even Here

Wherever this message finds you exhausted or hopeful, discouraged or healing remember:

You are not bound. You are not behind. You are not alone.

In Christ, you are already free. Your story is sacred. Your presence is powerful. And your family is worth showing up for.
